Miranda is the smallest and closest of the major moons of Uranus. Its surface has well defined chasms and deep valleys, some several kilometers deep.
Terrain and Landmarks[]
The terrain of Miranda is extremely complex, jagged and varied. Parts of the surface also have small fissures. Verona Rupes is an example of such terrain. It is a cliff that descends several kilometers into a valley. Arden Corona and Elsinore Corona are coronae, which are terrain that contrast heavily with the terrain around them. Elsinore Corona also has a deep valley nearby to it.
Exploration[]
Miranda's extreme terrain can make it a compelling target for exploration. Due to its very low gravity and the potential to encounter a fissure, rover wheels may not function as intended. A hopper vehicle, in which a craft moves between locations with a rocket engine, may circumvent wheel issues and explore deep valleys. Rovers using RCS or ion engines to keep them pressed against the terrain may also work on Miranda.
