The history of space exploration gives many well known examples. May we remember here only a few: MESSENGER (for Mercury), Venus Express, Mariner probes, Galileo and Cassini. Also, during the Apollo program, there were used manned orbiters that orbited the moon (the Service and Command Module and the lunar lander).
