The Saturn V is an American rocket that is designed to land men on the Moon and bring them back to Earth.

Its known appearance was on a custom translations file on [Purchasing / Saturn_V_Pack] of the SFS Steam Version. It was later removed but it was re-added back into the file.

Players individually do make their own design, but most players download blueprints from YouTubers.

Parts[]

The Saturn V consists of three stages.

S-IC[]

The S-IC is the first stage of the Saturn V. It is 42 meters tall and ten meters wide and weighs over 2300 tons when fully fueled. It is powered by five Rocketdyne F1 engines that can provide 34 thousand kilonewtons of thrust. The fuel used on this stage is RP-1 with liquid oxygen as an oxidizer. The first stage can bring the rocket to a suborbital trajectory that cannot leave the atmosphere.

S-II[]

The S-II is the second stage of the Saturn V. It is 25 meters tall and 10 meters wide, similar to the previous stage, and weighs over 480 tons when fully fueled. It has five Rocketdyne J-2 rocket engines that can provide 4900 kN of thrust. The fuel used is liquid hydrogen with liquid oxygen as an oxidizer. The second stage propelled the Saturn V barely to orbit.

S-IVB[]

The S-IVB is the third stage of the Saturn V. It is 18 meters tall, 6.6 meters wide and weighs around 262 tons. It has one Rocketdyne J-2 rocket engine that can provide around 1000 kilonewtons of thrust. The fuel used is similar to the second stage. The third stage made the rocket into orbit and performed the trans-lunar injection.

Instrument unit[]

The instrument unit can tell guidance and telemetry systems for the rocket. It is located on top of the S-IVB.

Lunar module[]

The lunar module is a spacecraft that can land two astronauts on the Moon. It consists of two parts: the ascent module and descent module. It is protected by the payload fairing during launch.

Apollo command and service module[]

The command and service module provides life support and thrust for the astronauts and the lunar module. Once in orbit, two astronauts are moved to the lunar module. The ascent module docks to the command and service module. The service module fires its engine back to Earth. The service module is jettisoned once it's ready for reentry. The command module is recoverable. The service has life support for the command module and has an AJ-10 engine to propel it to lunar orbit and back to Earth, while the Command Module is where the astronauts are placed. The Apollo CSM is placed on top of the payload fairing of the Saturn V.

Saturn V Escape Tower[]

The escape tower is an important part of the Saturn V. Just in case if a launch failure occurs the escape tower ignites its engines to escape from the failed rocket.

All launches except for Apollo 6 were successful; the first flight took place on November 9, 1967 and the last one is on May 15, 1973 which launched Skylab.

Launch Sequence to the Moon[]

Range Safety[]

If an event of a failure occurs at a moment, a rocket would be destroyed instantly by a range safety officer which includes shut down of all engines and to be destroyed by detonation; just in case if there were astronauts inside the Escape Tower pulls the capsule away from the rocket. But for S-IVB a third command is issued to irreversibly deactivate the self-destruct system once it reaches to orbit. Before launch, the self-destruct system is inactive.

    • It is currently the largest and heaviest rocket to carry humans beyond low earth orbit
    • It has the height of 363ft (111 m), the diameter of 33ft (10.1 m) and the weight of 2.8 million kilograms (6.2 million pounds).
    • It was the most powerful rocket that had ever flown successfully.
    • It was used in the Apollo program in the 1960s and 1970s. It also was used to launch the Skylab space station.
  • The first two stages were large that it had to fit by transporting them in a barge.
  • The Saturn V has two more rockets in the same family; Saturn IB and the Saturn I.
